00:04:03.584 --> 00:04:04.270
Thanks for having me, kenny.

00:04:04.270 --> 00:04:05.522
Thanks for having me.

00:04:05.562 --> 00:04:14.801
Kenny'd love to co-host well, I know it's early in the school year, colin, but uh, you decided to to make a change and you changed jobs and you went to a new school.

00:04:14.801 --> 00:04:15.323
How's that been for you?

00:04:15.323 --> 00:04:16.103
Good, I think.

00:04:16.124 --> 00:04:22.473
Um, you know, I growing up in dublin and you know, I think, playing there and having family go through there.

00:04:22.473 --> 00:04:28.267
I, you know, growing up in Dublin and you know playing there and having family go through there.

00:04:28.267 --> 00:04:35.425
I think you know if you would have asked me two years ago, I thought I would have finished my career there, but, as you both know, things happen.

00:04:35.425 --> 00:04:37.232
Sometimes change is needed.

00:04:37.232 --> 00:04:42.028
I think I landed in an awesome spot and it's been a great start to the school year so far.

00:04:42.459 --> 00:04:52.310
Well, I feel like we need to put a name with a very popular X site, which is also known as Twitter for baseball coaches.

00:04:52.310 --> 00:04:55.387
Did you expect it to take off the way it did?

00:04:56.470 --> 00:04:56.951
I didn't.

00:04:56.951 --> 00:04:59.127
So it's funny you say that.

00:04:59.127 --> 00:05:05.586
So the site on X High School Baseball Fields of America started about three years ago.

00:05:05.586 --> 00:05:08.809
We were on the tail end of COVID.

00:05:08.809 --> 00:05:22.620
I was coaching at Dublin, Jerome at the time, with Coach Huseman, yourself, Kenny, and we were just kind of in the beginning stages of thinking about maybe turf in the field out there at Jerome.

00:05:22.860 --> 00:05:26.108
And one day Coach Huseman had the idea.

00:05:26.108 --> 00:05:29.904
He came in and says what if we just turf the dirt?

00:05:29.904 --> 00:05:35.442
And being my young assistant coach, I said yeah, that's a great idea.

00:05:35.442 --> 00:05:38.867
Little did I know.

00:05:38.867 --> 00:05:41.632
I thought that was a terrible idea.

00:05:41.632 --> 00:05:46.690
I had never seen a high school field that just had the dirt turfed, you know.

00:05:46.690 --> 00:05:49.413
So that was kind of the plug for starting this site.

00:05:49.413 --> 00:05:51.201
High School Baseball is America, you know.

00:05:51.201 --> 00:06:05.418
I started reaching out to some coaches trying to get pictures of their field, and a thousand fields later now I still haven't found a high school field in the whole country that just has the dirt turfed, you know.

00:06:05.418 --> 00:06:09.656
So any coach out there listening today, if you have a high school field that just has the dirt turfed, you know so any coach out there listening today, if you, if you have a high school field that just has the dirt portion of your field turf.

00:06:09.656 --> 00:06:09.906
Please reach out to me.

00:06:09.863 --> 00:06:19.584
I'd be love to spotlight it on the site and I hope there's hundreds of coaches that reach out to you to do that you've.

00:06:19.745 --> 00:06:27.175
You've got a huge following and you've had a lot of fields being featured on your your x site.

00:06:27.175 --> 00:06:31.529
Is there one that jumps out as maybe the best field that you came across?

00:06:31.670 --> 00:06:34.242
yeah, no question, barb high school, lake charles, louisiana.

00:06:34.242 --> 00:06:41.062
Um, I think, as I've, as I've seen photos across the country, I think they just stick out.

00:06:41.062 --> 00:06:49.959
You know, um, I think a lot of it feeds from their alumni base, but again, you also have they also have tremendous district support and booster support down there.

00:06:49.959 --> 00:06:52.786
I mean just the facilities, it's just top notch.

00:06:52.786 --> 00:06:59.151
I don't have photos on me but again, just they're providing experience for those athletes down there is truly unmatched.

00:06:59.151 --> 00:07:08.452
So again, I would say Barb High School, lake Charles, louisiana, has really stood out to me of the thousands of fields that I've seen and highlighted and featured.

00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:39.932
Colin, you said you know that support that you get from the administration and from you know the district in order to have facilities like that, as we all know here, that's huge and as a baseball coach or a high school baseball coach, you know you're kind of hamstrung, so to speak, that if you can't raise the funds or if you don't have that district support, then it kind of hinders you to have facilities like that.

00:07:39.932 --> 00:07:46.552
And I'm interested to hear your comments on you know what do you think about?

00:07:47.420 --> 00:08:01.704
um, you know basically, uh, outside influences basically influencing uh what facilities you do have yeah, I think, as I've kind of gone through this, I've seen again thousands of fields, I've kind of really broken down to three different groups.

00:08:01.723 --> 00:08:08.386
I, I think you have programs that one, the school district supports them 100%.

00:08:08.386 --> 00:08:12.564
Baseball is a priority in that district and you can see it in the facility.

00:08:12.564 --> 00:08:18.946
I think you have another tier where the district might not support them but they have a really great booster group.

00:08:18.946 --> 00:08:22.182
They can fundraise the coach can fundraise the program.

00:08:22.182 --> 00:08:27.305
They all get behind knowing that they're not going to get that support from the school district with those, those funds.

00:08:27.305 --> 00:08:34.528
And third, I think you have a tier down there where, one, the school district doesn't support it and two, they just don't have any funds, the boosters aren't there.

00:08:34.528 --> 00:08:54.756
So again, to answer your question, I think, like you know, I kind of tier these into three different groups and I think it shows you know the programs that have that district support and that pretty much that unlimited treasure chest of cash versus the ones that don't.

00:08:54.797 --> 00:09:23.609
So Well, at the end of my coaching career I I was I was fortunate to get a coaching offer from Coach Huseman here, get a coaching offer from Coach Huseman here, and I don't know if I've ever really thanked you for the opportunity enough, but you know I really appreciate it and I found that you know, the camaraderie and the coaching staff was a huge part of that and we just had so much fun with it.

00:09:23.609 --> 00:09:42.172
And, colin, I wanted to get your take on it being that you grew up in Dublin You're a former player at Dublin, jerome, and then you jump on the staff with coach Huseman and talk about going from a player to becoming a coach and and how that transition was for you.

00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:42.701
Yeah.

00:09:42.701 --> 00:09:45.708
And to kind of circle back to the Twitter site Kenny part of it too.

00:09:45.708 --> 00:09:52.008
When I created the site I wanted to be able to feature and kind of like highlight some of these fields.

00:09:52.008 --> 00:10:03.446
And to your point, like, yeah, I did join Coach Huseman on his staff but I can guarantee and I'm sure Chris will say this thing, like I've spent more time with Chris working on the field than we did coaching at all.

00:10:03.446 --> 00:10:10.842
You know what I'm saying.

00:10:10.842 --> 00:10:18.326
So again, I understand coaches across the country, the amount of time, the amount of work that they're putting into their facility, and so the Twitter site was to kind of highlight and kind of celebrate some of those.

00:10:18.326 --> 00:10:21.033
I don't think that gets recognized enough across the country.

00:10:22.681 --> 00:10:27.601
But just to circle back to your point about Coach Huseman, I think it was really a no-brainer for me.

00:10:27.601 --> 00:10:34.913
I think at my banquet our senior year he stood up and said you know, coach, this kid's going to come coach for me.

00:10:34.913 --> 00:10:38.505
You know I had the opportunity to do that for five years, I think.

00:10:38.505 --> 00:10:40.591
Along the time I think we did have a good time.

00:10:40.591 --> 00:10:49.399
I think for me personally, since I was so close with Chris off the field you know we're really good friends, I think at times on the field I think that was tough, you know.

00:10:49.399 --> 00:10:51.706
I think you know having to turn that off right.

00:10:51.726 --> 00:10:54.767
We got a coach, we got a good job to do, knowing that we were so good friends off the field.

00:10:54.767 --> 00:11:05.500
I think we kind of ran into some situations where, you know, we might have butt heads or we didn't agree on some things just because we were so close off the field and kind of maybe a difference of philosophies on things.

00:11:05.500 --> 00:11:07.566
But again, I wouldn't change anything for the world.

00:11:07.566 --> 00:11:46.261
It was a great five years that I had the opportunity to coach in Dublin and just knowing that I have Chris and yourself kind of in the back back of my pocket as I move forward, continue on my coaching career, it's going to be huge for me moving forward so, colin, well, that's what I wanted to ask him too as well, and you know he's.

00:11:46.282 --> 00:12:10.630
He's coached for not only yourself, kenny, but he's a lot to offer, that has a lot of background, that knows that A it's dealing with the parents and dealing with the players, and how you coach and those relationships with your players was the field work is endless.

00:12:10.630 --> 00:12:16.712
And then, you know, last and certainly not least, is, you know, a booster group.

00:12:16.712 --> 00:12:26.414
I mean you have to coach your booster group and I think you know he certainly has the qualities to do all those things with his people skills.

00:12:26.414 --> 00:12:28.581
But I wanted to get his take on.

00:12:28.581 --> 00:12:30.566
You know coaching all those aspects.

00:12:30.566 --> 00:12:34.605
You know how does a high school coach jumble all that?

00:12:35.394 --> 00:12:45.918
Well, I think the big thing that comes to my mind and I think Chris, you know this firsthand, and Ken you as well, I think all the time, especially in high school athletes it's not about what you know, uh, it's about who you know.

00:12:45.918 --> 00:12:57.089
So, like you said, um, having the contacts, like yourself and Coach Carpenter, coach Saunders again, I'm trying to build those contacts up and try to meet as many of my people, as many people as I can.

00:12:57.089 --> 00:12:59.552
I've been able to do the same thing through the Twitter site.

00:12:59.552 --> 00:13:06.778
You know I'm talking to coaches daily on there.

00:13:06.778 --> 00:13:08.460
You know, trying to create connections, trying to create relationships.

00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:16.798
Because, at the end of the day and I think I've experienced this firsthand you know, if you don't know the right people, you know their job comes along and you don't have a relationship with them, I mean you're screwed.

00:13:16.798 --> 00:13:17.840
You know it doesn't matter.

00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:25.642
I mean you could be, you could have the best relationship with kids, you could be what's best for kids, you could know you know the best about that community.

00:13:25.642 --> 00:13:30.327
But at the end of the day, it's just you don't know the right people at the right time, you don't have a chance.

00:13:36.934 --> 00:13:39.360
Well, I've loved coaching and the grind that comes with coaching.

00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:43.749
And what people don't realize is being a teacher for 27 years, and you guys know this.

00:13:43.749 --> 00:13:58.022
Out of all sports that there are in high school that are available out there, baseball is the one sport that is probably the most physically demanding because you have to do all the work on the field.

00:13:58.022 --> 00:14:11.802
You've got to throw batting practice, you've got to hit fungos, and there's not another sport out there that requires the coach to do so much to get the just to play a baseball game.

00:14:11.802 --> 00:14:21.076
And how has it been for you when you made that transition from player you go off, you get your college degree, you come back and now you're a coach.

00:14:21.076 --> 00:14:22.278
How was that for you?

00:14:22.278 --> 00:14:30.945
Going to where you're like all right, I got a lot of uh, I got a lot of roles now not just assistant, assistant coach.

00:14:30.965 --> 00:14:33.048
Yeah, I think, first and foremost, kenny.

00:14:33.048 --> 00:14:40.736
I think in today's world of high school sports, finding good help is so hard, I think you know not.

00:14:40.736 --> 00:14:43.666
A lot of young guys come out of college they don't want to coach anymore.

00:14:43.666 --> 00:14:49.037
So first thing first is finding good help is so hard, I think.

00:14:49.076 --> 00:14:57.264
Secondly, you know, as I started as an assistant coach, one thing my dad always told me is try to find one thing you can take off the head coach's plate every day.

00:14:57.264 --> 00:15:17.841
So if I can do one little thing, if I can get the field set, if I can throw a BP, if I can write the lineup up, if I can get the press box ready, what's one thing that I can take off the head coach's plate as an assistant coach, that's going to make things run smoother because, like you said, the list of things that a head coach has to do these days is endless, um.

00:15:17.841 --> 00:15:23.025
So again, try to find one thing every day, or a couple things every day that I can take off the head coach's plate.

00:15:23.025 --> 00:15:25.115
Um is going to make me a better assistant.

00:15:25.135 --> 00:15:45.163
Down the road, I feel like yeah, and I I had, I had a follow-up to that too, and it's just like, and I think kenny is um dead on when he says, you know, people don't realize what a high school baseball coach and their assistants do, uh, to get things ready just for an event that night or that evening.

00:15:45.163 --> 00:16:06.027
And um, you know, I just think it's, how is that in comparison to other sports, when you know you usually have a stadium event which is turfed, maybe all the soccer coach has to do is drag out some corner flags and, you know, tell the kids to bring the goals over?

00:16:06.027 --> 00:16:12.048
And you know, I think the same thing too for other sports too as well.

00:16:12.048 --> 00:16:20.326
Basketball, there's hardly any setup involved and I think you have an athletic director that basically, you know, does those things.

00:16:20.326 --> 00:16:36.490
My findings is that athletic directors during the spring, that's their time, that's their downtime, that's their time, that's their downtime, and basically all that onus falls on, you know, the coach, and then ultimately down to the assistants.

00:16:36.490 --> 00:16:48.235
And I mean how?

00:16:48.296 --> 00:16:50.057
would you deal with other coaches, maybe a hands off athletic director?

00:16:50.057 --> 00:16:54.823
You know, when you deal with all those things that come during the spring I mean, I think it goes back to the point we talked about earlier it's like, does your district prioritize your sport?

00:16:54.823 --> 00:16:56.885
You know, is baseball priority for them?

00:16:56.885 --> 00:17:01.410
You know, I think in Central Ohio, and I think the whole state, you know we're not bringing any money.

00:17:01.410 --> 00:17:05.478
Okay.

00:17:05.478 --> 00:17:06.503
So I think, like you said, you know, do I need to?

00:17:06.523 --> 00:17:09.878
If I'm an athletic director, do I need to put onus on a sport that's not going to help the budget?

00:17:09.878 --> 00:17:11.365
You know, I think that's huge.

00:17:11.365 --> 00:17:17.928
But again, I think you try to balance things the best you can.

00:17:17.928 --> 00:17:25.169
But I think the big thing that I always try to do is don't let all those things become distractions for the kids.

00:17:25.169 --> 00:17:27.579
I think you know they're well aware.

00:17:27.579 --> 00:17:36.319
You know, especially in their own schools and their own settings, you know what sports might take priority over others in some situations.

00:17:36.319 --> 00:17:38.084
At the end of the day, those things will take care of themselves.

00:17:38.084 --> 00:17:48.883
I got to find a way to get the job done on the field with my kids, my coaches and again, I'm always going to advocate for my program, always going to advocate for my kids.

00:17:48.883 --> 00:17:53.088
But again, you know some situations your hands are tied and you really can't.

00:17:56.516 --> 00:18:01.474
There's some of those things are just you're not going to be able to change.

00:18:01.474 --> 00:18:15.090
Well, I think that you know, something that stood out to me is one of the reasons I started the podcast was and having an opportunity to talk to the coaches on the show here.

00:18:15.090 --> 00:18:29.527
And, Colin, if you could, you know, talk about your interaction, you know, both with the players where you get to see them go through four years, grow and become college baseball players or just go on with their life and the stories that come from our experiences.

00:18:29.527 --> 00:18:43.330
And what has that been like for you as far as when you're interacting with all the different coaches you've had an opportunity to work with both on the staff and with opposing coaches um, it's been huge, I think.

00:18:43.510 --> 00:18:46.462
First for, like you mentioned, like the relationship with some of my coaches.

00:18:46.462 --> 00:18:48.996
I think it came full circle for me a couple weeks ago.

00:18:48.996 --> 00:18:54.402
Um, I got to play golf with a couple of kids that were on my first JV team at Dublin Jerome.

00:18:54.402 --> 00:18:57.056
So that would have been almost six years ago.

00:18:57.056 --> 00:19:00.506
So those kids had just graduated college and they called me up to go play golf.

00:19:00.506 --> 00:19:01.856
We had a great time.

00:19:01.856 --> 00:19:07.219
So, again, that was kind of a full circle moment for me, knowing those relationships were huge.

00:19:09.044 --> 00:19:20.424
But again, thinking more along the line of relationships with other coaches like you mentioned, I think I don't know, chris can kind of echo on this one as well.

00:19:20.424 --> 00:19:23.200
I think we're all there for the same reason.

00:19:23.200 --> 00:19:26.842
I think everyone wants to win, everyone wants to have good relationships with kids.

00:19:26.842 --> 00:19:30.763
But I do think it's true that some guys are in it for different reasons.

00:19:30.763 --> 00:19:34.885
A lot of guys have different end goals and I think that shows.

00:19:34.885 --> 00:19:44.321
I think that shows of how they publicize their program, how they, you know, put themselves out there, maybe what the social media, whether it be other things across the district.

00:19:44.321 --> 00:19:54.566
But again, I think for the most part everyone's in it for the same reason, but again there's different nuances in there that each program, each coach has their own.

00:19:57.516 --> 00:20:10.145
Chris, what do you think I mean Colin's in a situation where he's been a great assistant coach and he should be a head coach by now.

00:20:10.145 --> 00:20:33.044
It's that simple, and what do you think he needs to do and what are some things that you would recommend, since you spent 30-plus years as both an assistant and a head coach, to make him more of someone that school districts need to look at and consider?

00:20:34.295 --> 00:20:39.987
Yeah, and that's a great question and to me it just comes back to one thing, and that's the athletic directors.

00:20:39.987 --> 00:21:04.877
Going back to what I said, it's a hands-off time in the spring and what they want is somebody that they don't have to worry about, that has experience, that has been through all these things, that can take care a the fields, the umpires, the buses, um, the parents, the booster groups, uh, the maintenance staff that cuts your fields, um, just a plethora of things out there that people don't realize that head coaches do.

00:21:04.877 --> 00:21:06.222
That you know.

00:21:06.222 --> 00:21:12.786
If you're not, if I'm an athletic director, the thing that I want is I want somebody that can handle all that for me and I don't have to worry about it.

00:21:12.786 --> 00:21:15.281
I mean hello.

00:21:17.277 --> 00:21:45.645
And I think when an athletic director sees somebody that doesn't have that head coaching experience but checks all the other boxes like Colin does, like Colin does, you know, I think it's one of those things that you know, it's kind of a leap of faith for an athletic director or a high school principal who's more hands-off, that might just say let's go with a guy that has experience, or you know, whatever.

00:21:45.685 --> 00:21:59.497
That might not be the best for the program, but you know it's, it's less work administratively and I honestly, after 30 some years of doing this, I mean I totally believe that you know in all my heart.

00:21:59.497 --> 00:22:08.366
But I think what he's doing to answer your second part of the question, and what assistants have to do is, I think, is doing exactly what he's doing.

00:22:08.366 --> 00:22:16.565
I've seen people that you know have stuck around in any sport basketball, soccer, baseball, football.

00:22:16.565 --> 00:22:27.519
They've been assistants for so long and they finally get their break and they've become great, great young coaches and you know, I think he's doing the right thing.

00:22:27.519 --> 00:22:32.347
I think he transitioned from you know I think he's doing the right thing.

00:22:32.347 --> 00:22:38.778
I think he transitioned from one popular Dublin suburb to another and they have just as good of the athletes down there.

00:22:38.778 --> 00:22:41.606
I think he's on the right track and it's just a matter of getting his break.

00:22:43.477 --> 00:23:15.759
Well, huey, the one thing I noticed, though, is from getting a chance to volunteer, was you gave a lot of responsibility to Colin, and I think, uh, colin, for you that that had to mean a lot, because you're you know it, there's a lot that goes into coaching, and you took on a lot of responsibility, and that's probably the one thing that you know you don't see on a resume, or when you go out and put in for, and you go into an interview, they don't see that.

00:23:15.759 --> 00:23:20.502
And what was your take when you, you know, jumped in on all those responsibilities?

00:23:21.696 --> 00:23:22.539
I think the big thing is.

00:23:22.539 --> 00:23:24.385
I think, especially as a young guy.

00:23:24.385 --> 00:23:27.905
I think the one thing is I always wanted my opinion to be valued.

00:23:27.905 --> 00:23:28.615
You know I always.

00:23:28.615 --> 00:23:32.545
You know Chris always asked you know, what do I think about this, what do I think about this?

00:23:32.545 --> 00:23:33.386
Did he always go with it?

00:23:33.386 --> 00:23:35.803
No, you know he was the head coach and that's how things, good.

00:23:35.803 --> 00:23:40.635
But you know, I think, the one thing, chris always did, you know whether it be anything from.

00:23:40.635 --> 00:23:45.359
You know, field work, what are we doing to you know, day of the game, lineup questions.

00:23:45.359 --> 00:23:52.724
He always asked my opinion, which I valued, and that was something I was thankful for.

00:23:52.724 --> 00:23:54.287
But again, did he always go with it?

00:23:54.287 --> 00:23:59.951
No, but he saw the value in me, he knew the relationships, he knew what I've seen.

00:23:59.951 --> 00:24:01.791
He always wanted my opinion.

00:24:01.791 --> 00:24:06.406
That's something I was thankful for.

00:24:09.000 --> 00:24:12.570
So, yeah, that's kind of where I was at with that.

00:24:12.570 --> 00:24:18.840
Well, you know you, you had a lot of opportunities to coach first base.

00:24:18.840 --> 00:24:34.602
And for the assistant coaches that might be listening out there and maybe they're a middle school coach or a freshman coach and they make that jump up to varsity, what advice would you give to those coaches that maybe the head coach says, all right, you're going to jumping up to varsity, you're going to be my first base coach.

00:24:34.602 --> 00:24:46.881
And what advice would you give to, when it comes to your interactions with both the, the base umpire, and the, the, the base runners that come down to first base?

00:24:47.522 --> 00:24:58.516
I think the biggest, one of the biggest things that coach Huseman kind of entrenched on me both as a player and as a coach, is we're going to create a great positive relationship with that umpire.

00:24:58.516 --> 00:25:00.800
I think you look at the Central District.

00:25:00.800 --> 00:25:07.344
I don't think you can find an umpire in the Central District that has something to say bad about Coach Huseman.

00:25:07.344 --> 00:25:07.845
I really don't.

00:25:07.845 --> 00:25:12.803
I think there's plenty of other coaches in the Central District that umpires can find bad things to say about.

00:25:12.803 --> 00:25:15.308
But again, I always tried to.

00:25:15.308 --> 00:25:28.588
Whoever that umpire was, I was always trying to strike up a conversation, make sure it's positive, make sure they left that game having a good outlook on our staff and our kids and our program.

00:25:28.588 --> 00:25:35.386
As far as the player is concerned, I think I would say I struggle with that at times.

00:25:35.386 --> 00:25:39.382
Again, I think each kid's different as far as you know what their mood is when they come down to first base.

00:25:39.382 --> 00:25:43.480
I try to keep them upbeat, you know, try to keep them happy but again, try to keep them locked in as well.

00:25:43.480 --> 00:25:53.942
You know I had a job to do, they had a job to do, you know, and at the end of the day, you know coach hughes was looking for me to do that job at first base with those kids.

00:25:53.942 --> 00:25:56.048
So, uh, but again, just to harness on your point, the umpires, that's huge.

00:25:56.476 --> 00:25:59.582
Um, even not as a first base go to head coach.

00:25:59.582 --> 00:26:05.601
Just making sure you have a positive um rapport and outlook with the umpires is huge.

00:26:05.601 --> 00:26:12.019
They can change the game, like this, um, and as you both know, umpires talk, umpires talk.

00:26:12.019 --> 00:26:13.920
It's like a little fraternity, you know.

00:26:13.920 --> 00:26:26.855
So if one thing happens at one game, um, it could be during the game, it could be during a rain delay, something could happen, you know, uh could be on the field, it could be off the field, uh, but they talk, and they talk a lot um, and you don't want that to come back and hurt you down the road.

00:26:26.855 --> 00:26:28.239
A different game, um.

00:26:28.239 --> 00:26:36.643
So again, making sure those umpires are taken care of at all times is definitely something I'll take with me when that opportunity comes from being head coach.

00:26:39.276 --> 00:26:44.825
Yeah, that's one thing, kenny, I wanted to bring up too, and it was a big part for me to put him at first base.

00:26:44.825 --> 00:26:52.621
Not only does he have a rapport with the first base umpire, who we might have the next game, but he's got to walk down the line.

00:26:52.621 --> 00:26:55.423
That's one of the reasons we put the dugout on the third base side.

00:26:55.423 --> 00:27:14.154
We want to make sure that he has to cross by the home plate umpire on the way around and have some comments or strike up a little conversation with the home plate umpire too as well In our game rapport is huge, it's huge.

00:27:14.154 --> 00:27:22.801
And you know, I think with colin, what you see is somebody that has a great rapport with not only uh other coaches, but with umpires, with parents and with the kids.

00:27:22.801 --> 00:27:32.769
And you know, to me, you know, putting it, putting all that um, all that uh onus onto him as a young guy, uh was just a no-brainer for me.

00:27:34.055 --> 00:27:37.705
Well, Colin, I wanted to talk just a little bit about this.

00:27:37.705 --> 00:27:53.183
You know you've been an assistant coach, but you've also been a head travel baseball coach, and what is your take on travel baseball, both the good and the bad side of it?

00:27:54.896 --> 00:27:55.599
I'll start with the good.

00:27:55.599 --> 00:27:58.163
I think it's good reps for the kids.

00:27:58.163 --> 00:28:01.805
I think being able to play a lot in the summer, I think is huge.

00:28:01.805 --> 00:28:11.863
Again, I think being able to get out there and just compete a lot, playing five, six games a weekend, I think that's huge.

00:28:11.863 --> 00:28:13.366
You know those reps are good.

00:28:13.474 --> 00:28:18.224
I think the bad side of it where do I begin?

00:28:18.224 --> 00:28:22.921
I think there's been a.

00:28:22.921 --> 00:28:24.625
There's a big talent gap.

00:28:24.625 --> 00:28:29.766
Now I think you have, you know, a lot of lower level teams versus a lot of higher level player teams.

00:28:29.766 --> 00:28:32.565
I think that's the talent gap continues to widen.

00:28:32.565 --> 00:28:33.675
I think.

00:28:36.541 --> 00:28:39.067
I think again, I think that's evident in tournaments out there too.

00:28:39.067 --> 00:28:42.621
I think you've got tournaments that are charging all this money, but again, there's a big talent gap.

00:28:42.621 --> 00:28:43.195
You know why.

00:28:43.195 --> 00:28:50.306
Am I going to go pay fifteen hundred bucks for a weekend I'm going to play, you know, three lower level or three higher level teams.

00:28:50.306 --> 00:28:52.278
Weekend I'm going to play, you know, three lower level or three higher level teams.

00:28:52.298 --> 00:28:59.409
I think what needs to happen is you need to be able to find that middle ground where I, knowing what type of team I am, how can I go play these types of teams?

00:28:59.409 --> 00:29:06.240
You know, you know I don't have a bunch of college level guys.

00:29:06.240 --> 00:29:08.164
I got kids that love to compete and love to play, but the talent's not there.

00:29:08.164 --> 00:29:10.973
Where can I find those types of teams in the summer?

00:29:10.973 --> 00:29:12.998
It just continues, you, you know it's a cash cow.

00:29:12.998 --> 00:29:24.799
Money keeps getting poured in but, um, again, just trying to find that middle ground where, knowing the type of team you have, uh, and trying to go get those meaningful reps against other teams, that's, that's the middle ground.

00:29:24.799 --> 00:29:31.467
You know, if I'm a travel coach these days, that's what I'd be looking for for my program um, to help those kids get better.

00:29:36.647 --> 00:29:38.974
And I feel like I need to talk about this.

00:29:38.974 --> 00:30:01.728
I don't think I've ever talked about it on a podcast, but you guys have worked the fields, just like I have in the summer, and to spend every weekend in the summer getting fields ready for players and coaches that have nothing to do with your program, and the pride that you guys take in and getting the field ready.

00:30:01.728 --> 00:30:09.266
What do you say to the, the travel coaches out there that show up to your field and what you know what?

00:30:09.266 --> 00:30:10.692
What would you like to see from them?

00:30:13.685 --> 00:30:14.951
Chris, you want to go first on that one.

00:30:19.646 --> 00:30:22.852
How about just a genuine care of the game?

00:30:22.852 --> 00:30:33.536
And hey, I know you want to win, everybody does but you can pick up a piece of trash after the game and you can.

00:30:33.536 --> 00:30:42.259
If you look over in the dugout and there's five signs posted that the coach there doesn't want seeds in the dugout, then the coach doesn't want seeds in the dugout.

00:30:42.259 --> 00:30:46.615
So you know, tell your players and police your players.

00:30:46.615 --> 00:30:50.476
And you know there's a lot that goes with that.

00:30:50.704 --> 00:31:21.500
I mean, colin and I have we've grown old at you know a ton of summer league games going on at our facilities and you know we've seen it all, from picking up dirty diapers, a ton of summer league games going on in our facilities, and you know we've seen it all, from picking up dirty diapers to you know, I mean you name it, I mean it's there, and I think that lack of care and that lack of just that disrespect you know that this is somebody's home, basically, and they work hard on it.

00:31:21.500 --> 00:31:25.996
You know, and I'm just going to trash it and leave, I don't think it's.

00:31:25.996 --> 00:31:28.589
You know that comes from the coach, you know.

00:31:28.790 --> 00:31:31.686
I think I think Chris said at the end I think it's just respect.

00:31:31.686 --> 00:31:40.978
You know, I've seen it countless times in person out at the fields, but I think on Twitter and running the site high school baseball fields, I think I see it even more.

00:31:40.978 --> 00:31:47.498
I think coaches are posting daily seeds, gums, just trash left out.

00:31:47.498 --> 00:31:49.432
It's just a disrespect.

00:31:49.432 --> 00:31:54.351
They don't understand the amount of time, the amount of money that's been poured into that facility.

00:31:54.351 --> 00:32:01.278
I think we're getting to a place where coaches are banning programs.

00:32:01.278 --> 00:32:04.114
You know I go both ways on that.

00:32:04.114 --> 00:32:05.432
You know I think there's going to be a common ground.

00:32:05.432 --> 00:32:13.332
But again, like, if that's what needs to be done, you know, to make sure the facility is in good standing, then the coach is going to do that.

00:32:13.332 --> 00:32:18.336
So again, that's definitely a problem that needs to be fixed immediately.

00:32:20.226 --> 00:32:21.269
Yes, I totally agree.

00:32:21.269 --> 00:32:26.872
And, uh, you know, I, there's a part during every podcast that I like to do this.

00:32:26.872 --> 00:32:39.571
And, and Chris, when we first did our first episode back in 2020, I, I, I didn't have this as part of the uh show, so I'm going to direct these questions to both of you guys.

00:32:39.571 --> 00:32:54.659
So, uh, I'm going to go colin first, you go second colin hate losing or love winning, love winning I hate to lose all right, colin, back to you.

00:32:54.659 --> 00:32:54.940
Why?

00:32:55.741 --> 00:33:02.458
why love winning over hate losing I just I think it provides a sense of like accomplishment.

00:33:02.458 --> 00:33:03.810
You know I'm going to the field every day to win.

00:33:03.810 --> 00:33:05.791
You know I don't even want to think about losing.

00:33:05.791 --> 00:33:10.825
You know, if we lose it happens, but the next day we're coming out, we're trying to win again.

00:33:10.825 --> 00:33:15.471
I think that provides a sense of accomplishment for me as a coach and the players that you know we got the job done.

00:33:23.625 --> 00:33:24.868
Yeah, to me I think it's just the competitiveness in my family.

00:33:24.868 --> 00:33:41.154
Growing up, I mean, it was, uh, you know, I had older siblings and just a very highly competitive family, and whether it was playing wiffle ball in the backyard or we're playing uno at the kitchen table, you know, I mean it was something that you got to win at all costs, you, you know, and I hated to lose, hated it.

00:33:41.796 --> 00:33:44.059
Well, huey, I know you're a Reds fan.

00:33:44.059 --> 00:33:48.067
Colin, are you a Cincinnati Reds fan?

00:33:48.067 --> 00:33:57.125
Okay, if you could add three players to the current Cincinnati roster, who would you take, group A or Group B?

00:33:57.125 --> 00:34:03.538
Group A Tom Seaver, pete Rose and Barry Larkin.

00:34:03.538 --> 00:34:12.418
Or, group B Jose Rio, ken Griffey Jr and Johnny Bench.

00:34:12.418 --> 00:34:13.980
Colin, who are you taking?

00:34:15.226 --> 00:34:15.869
I'm taking Group A.

00:34:15.869 --> 00:34:19.889
I want Pete Rose on my team any day of the week.

00:34:22.195 --> 00:34:22.576
Okay.

00:34:22.976 --> 00:34:29.797
Huey and I'm taking group B because I want the best catcher ever in baseball history, Johnny Bench.

00:34:30.657 --> 00:34:35.670
Okay, well, you see there was a lot of differing of opinions over the time.

00:34:35.670 --> 00:34:36.351
Kenny, definitely Okay.

00:34:36.371 --> 00:34:41.300
Colin, if you could sit down with three people, kenny, definitely Okay.

00:34:41.300 --> 00:35:01.954
Colin, if you could sit down with three people and spend a night having dinner with these guys throughout history, anybody sports or famous or whatever to pick their brains on, uh, becoming a, a great coach and a great leader who would you pick?

00:35:04.606 --> 00:35:05.972
You're killing me, kenny, with these.

00:35:05.972 --> 00:35:09.829
I'd say Aaron Boone.

00:35:09.829 --> 00:35:12.625
I think Aaron Boone is somebody I looked up to as a player.

00:35:12.625 --> 00:35:15.755
I love the way he played the game.

00:35:15.755 --> 00:35:18.413
I love the way he's coaching right now at the Yankees.

00:35:18.413 --> 00:35:23.056
That's somebody who sticks out to me, let me see.

00:35:23.056 --> 00:35:43.248
Maybe Bob Todd I think I've heard a lot of stories, again, coaches, I've been around, I've heard good stories, just like to pick his brain, about, you know, the college game and kind of what.

00:35:43.248 --> 00:35:47.612
He kind of came up through Ohio State, obviously growing up a big Ohio State Buckeyes fan.

00:35:47.612 --> 00:35:50.248
Again, there's a lot of stories there.

00:35:50.248 --> 00:35:56.960
Oh man, I'd go with those two.

00:35:56.960 --> 00:35:58.344
Just you put me on the spot.

00:35:58.344 --> 00:35:59.228
Those are two that come to mind.

00:35:59.228 --> 00:35:59.630
All right, who have?

00:35:59.630 --> 00:36:01.597
I go with those two, just you put me on the spot.

00:36:01.617 --> 00:36:02.201
Those are two, I hear you.

00:36:02.201 --> 00:36:03.164
You got.

00:36:03.985 --> 00:36:05.731
Do these have to be baseball guys?

00:36:05.952 --> 00:36:06.755
It could be anybody.

00:36:07.764 --> 00:36:12.257
Well, I got to go with my childhood hero, which would be Clint Eastwood.

00:36:12.257 --> 00:36:16.315
I mean, come on, it's Clint Eastwood.

00:36:16.315 --> 00:36:18.512
I mean, who wouldn't want to have done it with Clint Eastwood?

00:36:18.512 --> 00:36:28.072
Second would probably be and I'm a big Western TV guy so the Duke John Wayne.

00:36:28.253 --> 00:36:29.295
Clint.

00:36:29.335 --> 00:36:29.777
Eastwood.

00:36:29.777 --> 00:36:47.371
If you're having dinner with those two guys and then you throw in somebody like I don't know, like a Ronald Reagan or Pete Rose, you know just gritty, gritty guys, and I think that's what we're kind of missing today.

00:36:47.371 --> 00:36:49.536
You know, is that grit?

00:36:49.536 --> 00:36:54.134
And yeah, I always looked up to those guys.

00:36:54.554 --> 00:37:21.835
Yeah, well, you know what parents and you know the players get to see it quite often, but the interactions with the coaching staff and and we've been pretty I don't know what word I want to use, just you know, on topic or whatever, but we've had a lot of fun over the years and you know, both as coaching together and against each other.

00:37:21.835 --> 00:37:27.777
And, um, colin, what is your funniest memory as a coach or player?

00:37:30.065 --> 00:37:37.972
I think my best um Huseman story um, I think it was when I was a player, uh, so it was my senior year.

00:37:37.972 --> 00:37:45.961
We're playing in the sectional final at home on a Wednesday against Columbus Briggs.

00:37:45.961 --> 00:37:50.233
We were a very high seed that year.

00:37:50.233 --> 00:37:52.572
I think we were top 10, maybe even top 5.

00:37:52.572 --> 00:37:53.929
We had a couple D1 guys.

00:37:53.929 --> 00:37:57.773
So we're a really strong team and we're playing Briggs on a Wednesday.

00:37:59.465 --> 00:38:01.228
Briggs had the City League Championship.

00:38:01.228 --> 00:38:02.050
On a Saturday.

00:38:02.050 --> 00:38:03.554
We're in the sectional final.

00:38:03.554 --> 00:38:04.396
They're throwing off.

00:38:04.396 --> 00:38:05.445
They come in, they throw.

00:38:05.445 --> 00:38:11.150
Some guy throwing probably not even breaking maybe 70 miles per hour, just junking us all day.

00:38:11.150 --> 00:38:14.429
We're a tight ball game.

00:38:14.429 --> 00:38:16.688
All game it's a one-to-one.

00:38:16.688 --> 00:38:18.474
Going to the top of the seventh.

00:38:18.474 --> 00:38:20.753
They get one in the top to go up two-to-one.

00:38:21.746 --> 00:38:34.047
Here we are losing to Columbus Briggs in a sectional final and we're coming in to get our last bats in the bottom half of the inning and Coach Hewson brings us all together and he goes.

00:38:34.047 --> 00:38:38.427
Guys, just to let you know this is going to be my last time ever coaching at Jerome.

00:38:38.427 --> 00:38:39.248
He goes I'm done.

00:38:39.248 --> 00:38:42.333
This is my last time ever coaching at Jerome he goes I'm done.

00:38:42.333 --> 00:38:42.913
This is my last game ever.

00:38:42.913 --> 00:38:48.500
So I was up fifth that inning, we ended up tying it up.

00:38:48.500 --> 00:38:57.327
I forget how it happened, but I came to bat with a guy on third one out.

00:38:57.327 --> 00:38:59.012
I didn't even have to look down, I just gave him the thumbs up.

00:38:59.012 --> 00:38:59.813
I knew the squeeze was on.

00:38:59.813 --> 00:39:02.726
Um, we got the squeeze down, we won the game, um.

00:39:03.708 --> 00:39:07.936
But the funniest part of it all was he ended up coaching for 10 more years.

00:39:07.936 --> 00:39:11.190
You know this was 2000 and a half.

00:39:11.190 --> 00:39:14.302
He comes in, we're losing guys, this is my last game ever coaching.

00:39:14.302 --> 00:39:17.288
Uh, I'm gonna go leave and watch my son play college.

00:39:17.288 --> 00:39:19.331
Uh, and he lasts 10 more years.

00:39:19.331 --> 00:39:22.175
So that was looking back.

00:39:22.175 --> 00:39:27.289
If I had to say, oh, that's typical Huseman, did it motivate us?

00:39:27.289 --> 00:39:29.034
In the heat of the moment?

00:39:29.034 --> 00:39:29.637
Probably.

00:39:29.637 --> 00:39:35.672
But you know, thankfully he ended up continuing coaching because I got to end up coaching with him.

00:39:35.672 --> 00:39:39.485
I look back, that's a funny moment in history.

00:39:39.485 --> 00:39:43.757
But again, I'm thankful that he did end up coaching for those 10 more years.

00:39:43.757 --> 00:39:45.690
It's time to get with him.

00:39:47.106 --> 00:39:50.635
If you didn't get that squeeze down, I would have been gone 10 years ago.

00:39:53.327 --> 00:40:03.110
And, to bring up a point, there are some questionable calls at the end there and if Huseman didn't have the great relationship with the umpires that he did, we don't win that game.

00:40:03.110 --> 00:40:06.574
So he still tells that story that you know.

00:40:06.574 --> 00:40:12.614
Thankfully he had a good relationship because there were some bank-bank calls that went our way down the stretch.

00:40:13.905 --> 00:40:16.992
Yeah, yeah, you know you got a great story.

00:40:17.125 --> 00:40:36.288
I'm sure you are the king of stories, so let's hear it my head's just swimming with stories, you know, um, but you know, the more and more I think about it, uh, and and go on, it's just I.

00:40:36.288 --> 00:40:58.605
I lock all those stories up here, you know, and I keep them all from the bus rides to you know, the night spent fundraising to you know practices to you know, pregame to the postgame celebrations were, you know, off the hook sometimes.

00:40:58.605 --> 00:41:06.168
We're you know, off the hook sometimes, but I like to keep those, you know, in here and in my heart.

00:41:06.168 --> 00:41:17.797
And just every time I see somebody that comes back, you know I just I refer back to that and you know, to me it's just like a special thing that you know I kind of hold dear.

00:41:18.965 --> 00:41:24.538
You know I can tell many stories, kenny, about you and I, and they wouldn't even include baseball.

00:41:24.538 --> 00:41:26.748
They'd be out back fishing where my pond is.

00:41:26.748 --> 00:41:32.318
Or you know us having lunch over at the restaurant, or you know whatever that might be.

00:41:32.318 --> 00:41:35.173
And with Colin, you know it'd be on the golf course.

00:41:35.173 --> 00:41:36.585
You know we'd go golf.

00:41:36.585 --> 00:41:37.606
Or you know the time we spent teaching together.

00:41:37.606 --> 00:41:38.047
You know we'd go golf.

00:41:38.047 --> 00:41:39.869
Or you know the time we spent teaching together.

00:41:39.869 --> 00:41:54.172
And I think that's what's more important is, you know, just having that relationship off the field, as you know, just as well as it was on the field too, and those stories are just endless.

00:41:54.172 --> 00:41:54.974
They're endless.

00:41:55.795 --> 00:42:03.934
Yeah, I, you know I was a head coach early in my career and I never really got a chance to be an assistant coach.

00:42:03.934 --> 00:42:24.150
And then when you brought me on at the very end of my career there and gave me a chance to just volunteer and be around you guys, I, you know we did such fun things with baseball but I really don't think I laughed as much as I did my whole entire career that when I spent with you guys.

00:42:24.150 --> 00:42:35.518
And you know, huey, I lived for your impersonations of other coaches or players or umpires or whatever it may be.

00:42:35.518 --> 00:42:53.407
If you could share the story of where Colin's coaching at now Marysville and one of our coaching staff members ends up becoming an umpire, yeah, is this the TARP?

00:42:53.869 --> 00:42:55.494
Is this the TARP situation?

00:42:55.494 --> 00:43:00.532
Yeah, the TARP situation was we had.

00:43:00.532 --> 00:43:03.577
I'm'm sorry, my dog is barking at another dog.

00:43:03.577 --> 00:43:05.327
It's a squirrel, um.

00:43:05.327 --> 00:43:08.793
So my dog, uh, or my dog my uh.

00:43:08.793 --> 00:43:13.340
Other coach, uh, there we go, all right.

00:43:13.340 --> 00:43:16.726
So my coach, tracy molter, bless his heart.

00:43:16.726 --> 00:43:28.257
He passed away a few years ago and he was our assistant coach, and we show up to Marysville and here he is umpiring the bases.

00:43:28.847 --> 00:43:29.795
And it's a tournament game.

00:43:30.586 --> 00:43:34.733
It's a tournament game and I'm thinking, man, I don't think this is legal.

00:43:34.733 --> 00:43:39.371
Yeah, and we've had that.

00:43:39.371 --> 00:43:50.625
That's the second time that's happened with Tracy, because he was a very good class one umpire and he there's a foul ball On the first base side.

00:43:50.625 --> 00:43:56.425
It hits the tarp, bounces in the air and gets caught by the first baseman.

00:43:56.425 --> 00:44:17.269
He holds it up and Tracy's like he's out of there and I'm like Tracy had hit the tarp and it bounced and he's like I didn't see that and I said can you refer to, you know home place umpire which was Reggie and if you guys know, reggie, reggie and uh, umpiring in the central district is synonymous with Marysville.

00:44:18.333 --> 00:44:22.192
Uh, reggie's one of those guys that you come up to the game and he gives the ground rules for Marysville because he's done so many Marysville.

00:44:22.192 --> 00:44:25.304
Reggie's one of those guys that you come up to the game and he gives the ground rules for Marysville because he's done so many Marysville games.

00:44:25.304 --> 00:44:30.452
I mean, the head coach didn't give the ground rules and I looked at Reggie.

00:44:30.452 --> 00:44:31.394
I'm like, well, can you ask?

00:44:31.394 --> 00:44:39.065
I just walked back and Tracy, years later, bless his heart, said you know what?

00:44:39.065 --> 00:44:40.009
I messed that up.

00:44:40.009 --> 00:44:41.333
I messed that up.

00:44:41.333 --> 00:44:42.525
I messed that up.

00:44:42.525 --> 00:44:43.327
But we can.

00:44:43.327 --> 00:44:48.554
You know we won the game, but we can look at that and that's the type of relationships we had with the umpires.

00:44:48.554 --> 00:44:53.831
I knew he was wrong, but am I going to sit there and undress the guy you know in front of her?

00:44:53.831 --> 00:44:55.009
No, absolutely not.

00:44:55.550 --> 00:44:56.373
Yeah, definitely.

00:44:56.373 --> 00:45:11.775
Well, guys, I you know I can't thank you guys enough for taking the time, uh, before a Sunday football game and uh, you know the the Bengals are coming on and um, but I, uh, one last question if I could who do you got?

00:45:11.775 --> 00:45:17.416
I know the reds aren't going to be there, but who do you got in the?

00:45:18.217 --> 00:45:28.012
this is a homer answer, but I I think the yankees breakthrough this is a tough one for me.

00:45:28.793 --> 00:45:31.898
Um, you know, I like the dodgers.

00:45:31.898 --> 00:45:33.380
I like the dodgers.

00:45:33.380 --> 00:45:44.833
I just think their lineup is tough and you know their pitching's there They'd love to play for that coach and I just think they'll be a tough out.

00:45:44.833 --> 00:45:46.795
They'll be a tough out.

00:45:47.115 --> 00:45:52.420
Well, colin, once again for anybody that's listening, how do they find you on X?

00:45:52.420 --> 00:46:02.516
And if you could just tell us that, because I'm sure there's some people that have that would love to see all the different fields around the country.

00:46:02.644 --> 00:46:04.311
Yeah, it's at high school baseball fields.

00:46:04.311 --> 00:46:05.454
Pretty, pretty simple.

00:46:05.454 --> 00:46:08.168
I think I'd be remiss.

00:46:08.168 --> 00:46:14.559
You know, as this got started, I've been able to partner with netting professionals down in Florida.

00:46:14.559 --> 00:46:18.353
Will Minor and his team have just been incredible to work with.

00:46:18.353 --> 00:46:25.947
They kind of share the same vision for me.

00:46:25.947 --> 00:46:26.329
As far as you know.

00:46:26.329 --> 00:46:33.572
Why I created that, you know, is, you know, showcasing these fields, getting getting the, being able to celebrate the work and the time and the effort, uh, that all these coaches put into their facilities, um.

00:46:33.572 --> 00:46:36.188
So again, like I said, it's at high school baseball fields.

00:46:36.188 --> 00:46:54.206
On X, um, there's thousands of thousands of photos on there of country high school fields across the country and you know, if you're a high school coach out there, just feel free to shoot me a DM and I'd be more than happy to, you know, highlight your field and the work you do for your school.

00:46:56.610 --> 00:47:14.112
Well, guys, thanks again for taking the time for to be on the show and uh, huey, wow, thanks again for jumping on and, uh, and being a co-host, I mean you, uh, you probably need to have your own show because you do such a great job yeah, you do a great job, kenny.

00:47:14.152 --> 00:47:17.989
You do a great job for high school sports too and really appreciate what you've done.

00:47:18.771 --> 00:47:23.766
Well, it's Baseball Coaches, unplugged, presented by AthleteOne Guys.

00:47:23.766 --> 00:47:24.507
Thanks again.

00:47:25.351 --> 00:47:25.552
Thanks.

00:47:25.592 --> 00:47:26.574
Ken, thank you.

00:47:26.574 --> 00:47:36.775
To put a bow in today's conversation, coach Seeley shared ways an assistant coach can ease the workload on a head coach by being proactive.

00:47:36.775 --> 00:47:40.715
An assistant coach needs to build a positive rapport with the umpires.

00:47:40.715 --> 00:47:52.137
And finally, if your goal is to be a head coach one day, build your contacts in the coach community because many times it adds to your value as a potential candidate for a head coaching job.
