00:00:01.020 --> 00:00:07.333
Are today's MLB players having a negative impact on high school and travel baseball players?

00:02:29.133 --> 00:02:32.990
Hey everyone, welcome back to Baseball Coaches Unplugged.
00:02:33.580 --> 00:02:39.133
And today I want to talk about something we all see more and more in high school sports showboating.
00:02:39.133 --> 00:02:46.293
You know what I'm talking about the backfl flips, the exaggerated celebrations, sometimes even trash talk.
00:02:46.293 --> 00:02:59.164
A lot of people like to call it swag or confidence, and don't get me wrong, I'm all for enthusiasm, but there's a line between celebrating with your team and putting on a look-at-me show.
00:02:59.164 --> 00:03:01.790
That's more about the individual than the team.
00:03:01.790 --> 00:03:03.334
Now I get it.
00:03:03.334 --> 00:03:05.395
These kids watch the pros on TV.
00:03:05.395 --> 00:03:05.929
They see guys like MLB players than the team.
00:03:05.929 --> 00:03:05.931
Now I get it.
00:03:05.931 --> 00:03:06.193
These kids watch the pros on TV.
00:03:06.193 --> 00:03:14.032
They see guys like MLB players flipping the bat or a pitcher stare down the batter after striking him out.
00:03:14.032 --> 00:03:18.925
They see the swagger and to them it looks like confidence and in a way it is.
00:03:18.925 --> 00:03:21.627
Confidence is key in baseball.
00:03:21.627 --> 00:03:25.691
You've got to believe you're going to make that player get that hit.
00:03:25.691 --> 00:03:32.228
But what we have to remember is that when kids look up to these pros they might not always see the whole picture.
00:03:32.228 --> 00:03:39.050
They see the confidence, but they don't see the years of discipline and respect that go into what these players do.
00:03:40.781 --> 00:03:42.264
For example, ken Griffey Jr.
00:03:42.264 --> 00:03:47.245
He had an effortless swagger to him, the way he'd strut after a home run.
00:03:47.245 --> 00:03:52.468
Griffey played with confidence, but it was always about his love for the game.
00:03:52.468 --> 00:03:57.091
He wasn't out there trying to show up an opponent or make it all about himself.
00:03:57.091 --> 00:04:01.611
He was just playing baseball the only way he knew how, with joy and passion.
00:04:01.611 --> 00:04:06.621
That's the kind of enthusiasm we should want our players to bring.
00:04:06.621 --> 00:04:09.186
But here's the danger.
00:04:09.186 --> 00:04:17.824
When high school players see big moments and try to bring the swagger into their games, they sometimes cross the line into what is called showboating.
00:04:17.824 --> 00:04:20.593
Showboating is not confidence.
00:04:20.593 --> 00:04:22.862
It's about drawing attention to yourself.
00:04:22.862 --> 00:04:32.704
It's saying look, look at me, look how good I am, and it usually comes at the expense and respect for the game and for your opponent.
00:04:32.704 --> 00:04:38.697
I'll tell you that's not the message that you want to send to our teams.
00:04:39.826 --> 00:04:42.915
My first year as a varsity head coach, I had a player named Ty Harriet.
00:04:42.915 --> 00:04:47.495
He hit 15 home runs on the varsity as a freshman.
00:04:47.495 --> 00:04:52.055
When his high school career ended, he had 41 home runs.
00:04:52.055 --> 00:04:55.653
Never once did he admire his home run.
00:04:55.653 --> 00:04:58.434
He just put his head down and ran around the bases.
00:04:58.434 --> 00:05:02.214
His senior year he had 38 walks.
00:05:02.214 --> 00:05:04.672
15 were intentional.
00:05:04.672 --> 00:05:12.514
He never showed frustration to the walks, or even if he struck out, he never let his emotions get the best of him.
00:05:12.514 --> 00:05:16.014
He just acted like he did it 100 times before.
00:05:17.947 --> 00:05:19.132
Now don't misunderstand me here.
00:05:19.132 --> 00:05:22.673
We want our players to feel proud of what they've accomplished.
00:05:22.673 --> 00:05:30.752
When you hit a big double or strike someone out in a tight spot, it's natural to want to celebrate.
00:05:30.752 --> 00:05:39.213
But instead of directing that energy toward the other team or into an act, let's teach our players to direct it towards their teammates.
00:05:39.213 --> 00:05:46.035
That's where the power is in building each other up and not tearing someone else down.
00:05:46.035 --> 00:05:51.391
There's a huge difference between celebrating with your team and showing up the other team.
00:05:51.391 --> 00:05:58.295
I love seeing the dugout go wild after a big play, but I've always told the players celebrate with each other, bring the energy back to the dugout.
00:05:58.295 --> 00:06:05.545
Go wild after a big play, but I've always told the players celebrate with each other, bring the energy back to the dugout, not out there on the field in a way that disrespects the other team.
00:06:07.569 --> 00:06:10.935
Now some of you could say well, coach, you're taking the fun out of the game.
00:06:10.935 --> 00:06:20.839
But here's the thing Baseball is a team sport and we focus too much on one person's moment, we lose that team aspect.
00:06:20.839 --> 00:06:22.425
Plus.
00:06:22.425 --> 00:06:25.276
Why do you want to give the opposing team a reason to want to play harder?
00:06:25.276 --> 00:06:29.855
As coaches, it's on us to set the tone.
00:06:29.855 --> 00:06:35.718
We need to create an environment where confidence is encouraged, but respect is a priority.
00:06:35.718 --> 00:06:40.326
Our players should know that courage, but respect is a priority.
00:06:40.326 --> 00:06:47.086
Our players should know that, yes, we want them to play with passion and heart, but we also want them to show respect for the opponent and, most importantly, respect the game.
00:06:47.086 --> 00:06:49.812
This doesn't mean we don't have fun.
00:06:49.812 --> 00:06:53.526
It just means we find the right way to channel that energy.
00:06:53.526 --> 00:07:05.012
The good thing is, 99% of coaches coach the game the right way Most scouts and college coaches aren't looking for kids who need the spotlight.
00:07:05.894 --> 00:07:11.894
They're looking for players who can control their emotions, handle pressure and show respect.
00:07:11.894 --> 00:07:22.199
The guy who hits a home run and spits around the bases like he's done it a hundred times, that's the kid that's going to get noticed because he's showing confidence, not arrogance.
00:07:22.199 --> 00:07:25.975
At the end of the day, baseball is a game of humility.
00:07:25.975 --> 00:07:29.374
This game will humble you quickly if you let it.
00:07:29.374 --> 00:07:37.076
So why not approach it with a sense of respect, both for ourselves and for those that you compete against?
00:07:37.076 --> 00:07:41.875
So, for all the players listening, celebrate with your teammates.
00:07:41.875 --> 00:07:47.930
Build them up, play with passion, play with confidence, but leave the showboating home.
00:07:47.930 --> 00:07:53.297
Let your talent do the talking, not the bat flip or the stare down.
00:07:53.297 --> 00:07:56.194
And for the coaches, keep coaching them up.
00:07:56.194 --> 00:08:02.793
When we do, we help create not only better baseball players, but better teammates and better people.
00:08:04.105 --> 00:08:07.074
Thanks for tuning in to this episode of the Baseball Coaches Unplugged.

00:08:15.829 --> 00:08:17.795
Stay focused and stay humble.
00:08:17.795 --> 00:08:23.351
