00:01:56.040 --> 00:01:59.171
Before we get started, I'd like to make a couple just quick announcements.
00:01:59.171 --> 00:02:32.984
At the time of this recording, it's January 25th, and on January 27th, which would be Monday, I'm going to be on an operating room table at the Cleveland Clinic for ulcerative colitis, something I've been battling for the last 12 years, and I found out recently that the J pouch that was put inside of me when they removed my large intestines and colon 12 years ago is now failing.
00:02:32.984 --> 00:03:04.308
So I will be out of commission for a and it's created osteomyelitis which is attacking my spine and I am going to be living with an ostomy bag for a minimum of six months to a year and maybe for the rest of my life.
00:03:04.308 --> 00:03:06.939
A minimum of six months to a year and maybe for the rest of my life.
00:03:06.939 --> 00:03:12.072
But my whole point for letting you know this is going to continue to do the podcast.
00:03:12.072 --> 00:03:23.346
This episode will go out on Wednesday, which I believe would be the 29th and the following week.
00:03:23.346 --> 00:03:25.349
I've already recorded and got ahead of things.
00:03:25.349 --> 00:03:45.127
I was excited to get butch chaffin to uh join me and, uh, we really cover a lot of great things and, uh, it's a great episode, something I think you guys would really enjoy, and that would be on, I believe that wednesday, february 5th, I believe that Wednesday, february 5th.
00:03:45.147 --> 00:04:05.391
But if you're listening here right now, I want to let you know that if you've got something you think might be bothering you it might be a health issue, but you're not taking the time to make an appointment to go see a doctor, get it checked out.
00:04:05.391 --> 00:04:14.431
I would recommend doing it because you just you just never know what what's going to happen and you know it's best to get ahead of things if you can.
00:04:14.431 --> 00:04:51.112
You know I I spoke with a friend of mine who, you know, wanted me to help him out with some things and his name is Mike Yinger, and it ended up jog on my memory to set up an appointment with my surgeon and because of that they checked some biopsies and now I'm in the boat I'm in now I have to have surgery and definitely having life-changing experience with how I'm going to be dealing with day-to-day life.
00:04:51.112 --> 00:04:52.886
But enough about me.
00:04:52.886 --> 00:05:06.213
I wanted to let you know that I'm going to continue to try to get back as quick as possible with the podcast, hoping to have no interruptions, and I got ahead of it with a couple episodes here.
00:05:06.213 --> 00:05:23.127
So thank you again for listening and hopefully not preaching to you about your health, but you know your family's counting on you, so do what you can to stay healthy.
00:05:23.127 --> 00:05:37.007
And now I'd like to just do what is expected when you decided to check out this episode, and let's jump into that right now.
00:05:38.401 --> 00:05:38.901
And today.
00:05:38.901 --> 00:05:46.564
I want to dive into a topic that every player faces at some point in their playing career Overcoming slumps.
00:05:46.564 --> 00:05:53.774
Whether you're a high school player or a seasoned pro, hitting a rough patch is inevitable.
00:05:53.774 --> 00:06:02.942
But fear not, because today we're going to explore how players can break out of slumps and how coaches can play a pivotal role in that process.
00:06:02.942 --> 00:06:06.048
Let's start by defining a slump.
00:06:06.649 --> 00:06:11.543
A slump is an extended period where a player's performance dips significantly.
00:06:11.543 --> 00:06:20.672
This could be a batting slump, where a hitter struggles to get hits, or a pitching slump, where a pitcher can't seem to find a strike zone.
00:06:20.672 --> 00:06:28.271
Slumps can be mentally and physically draining, but also there's an opportunity for growth and learning.
00:06:28.271 --> 00:06:33.069
So how can a player overcome a slump?
00:06:33.069 --> 00:06:39.483
First step is you've got to stay positive and maintain confidence.
00:06:39.483 --> 00:06:44.440
It's easy to get down on yourself when things aren't going well, but a positive mindset is crucial.
00:06:44.440 --> 00:06:51.339
Remember slumps are temporary and every player that's ever played the game will go through them.
00:06:53.084 --> 00:06:55.901
Next thing we need to do is focus on the fundamentals.
00:06:55.901 --> 00:07:02.220
Sometimes, when players are struggling, they try to do too much or they change their approach.
00:07:02.220 --> 00:07:06.625
Go back to the basics, like proper stance.
00:07:06.625 --> 00:07:07.245
Grip.
00:07:07.245 --> 00:07:12.211
Swing mechanics can easily help you reset and refocus.
00:07:12.211 --> 00:07:15.937
Another key aspect is mental preparation.
00:07:15.937 --> 00:07:20.990
Visualization and mental rehearsal can be a powerful tool.
00:07:20.990 --> 00:07:30.648
Imagine yourself succeeding in the game, seeing the ball hit off the sweet spot or even making the perfect pitch.
00:07:30.648 --> 00:07:35.735
The mental practice can translate into better performance on the field.
00:07:38.041 --> 00:07:42.533
The next thing to talk about is how can the coach help players overcome these slumps?
00:07:42.533 --> 00:07:53.134
Coaches, I don't need to tell you how to do it, but you know, probably one thing that is helpful would be to be supportive and understanding.
00:07:53.134 --> 00:08:02.535
It is important to create a positive environment where the players feel safe expressing their struggles without fear of judgment.
00:08:02.535 --> 00:08:09.793
One effective strategy is to break down the slump into smaller, manageable parts.
00:08:09.793 --> 00:08:18.211
For example, if a hitter is struggling with their swing, the coach can work with them on specific drills to improve their mechanics.
00:08:18.211 --> 00:08:27.564
Whether it's getting out the tee, soft toss or live batting practice, coaches can also provide constructive criticism.
00:08:27.564 --> 00:08:35.365
This feedback is huge for a player's mental toughness.
00:08:35.365 --> 00:08:41.105
Instead of focusing on what the player is doing wrong, highlight what they're doing right and build from there.
00:08:41.105 --> 00:08:46.527
Positive reinforcement can go a long way in boosting a player's confidence.
00:08:46.527 --> 00:08:52.765
Just think back to when you played the game as a player coaches Remember.
00:08:53.607 --> 00:08:56.211
A recent guest that I had was Tim Lee.
00:08:56.211 --> 00:08:59.842
He's the baseball coach at Ingram High School in Seattle, washington.
00:08:59.842 --> 00:09:06.835
Tim shared how he helps his players maintain composure and focus during challenging times.
00:09:06.835 --> 00:09:16.369
He emphasized the importance of positive visualization and box breathing techniques to help players stay calm and centered.
00:09:16.369 --> 00:09:20.489
Another guest I had was David Klein.
00:09:20.489 --> 00:09:22.615
Another guest I had was David Klein.
00:09:22.615 --> 00:09:30.013
He's the founder of MP Legends out in California, and he discussed the importance of shifting the focus from winning to development.
00:09:30.013 --> 00:09:43.139
By prioritizing player growth over immediate results, coaches can help players stay motivated and committed to improving even when they're in a slump.
00:09:43.139 --> 00:09:54.964
So, in conclusion, overcoming slumps is a combination of mental toughness, focusing on the fundamentals and a supportive coaching environment.
00:09:54.964 --> 00:10:03.556
Players need to stay positive, work on their skills and use mental strategies to regain their confidence.
00:10:03.556 --> 00:10:13.469
Coaches, you play a critical role by providing guidance, constructive feedback and creating a positive atmosphere.
00:10:13.469 --> 00:10:15.964
That's all for now.
00:10:16.024 --> 00:10:18.331
So thanks for tuning in to Baseball Coaches Unplugged.
