00:02:44.491 --> 00:02:49.463
Grow the show and look for a new episode every Wednesday.
00:02:49.484 --> 00:02:52.271
I wanted to dive into a topic that's been pressing on all of our minds lately sportsmanship.
00:02:52.271 --> 00:03:03.972
This past weekend, college football showed us exactly what not to do Flag planting on a team's field after winning a college football game.
00:03:03.972 --> 00:03:16.584
Michigan did it at Ohio State, nc State followed suit at the University of North Carolina, florida at FSU and Arizona State.
00:03:16.584 --> 00:03:30.709
At Arizona, even Michigan's head coach, sharone Moore, as soon as the game came to an end, turned and walked to the back of the benches and started waving and talking to the OSU fans.
00:03:30.709 --> 00:03:35.510
This is an image that is not needed in sports.
00:03:35.510 --> 00:03:51.449
I do have to say hats off to University of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian for stopping his players as they were attempting to plant a flag at their rival, Texas A&M's field, and I get that.
00:03:51.449 --> 00:04:00.258
Rivalries can sometimes get heated and we have to do more and we have to be better.
00:04:00.258 --> 00:04:03.814
And what does this have to do with a baseball podcast?
00:04:03.814 --> 00:04:12.451
Baseball is supposed to be a game of respect and honor and if you remember Vince Lombardi's famous quote, act like you've been there before.
00:04:12.451 --> 00:04:16.786
That's what winning with class means.
00:04:16.786 --> 00:04:24.670
When you step onto a field, you're not just representing yourself or your team, you're representing the entire sport.
00:04:24.670 --> 00:04:34.016
Shake hands, acknowledge the other team's efforts and walk off the field with your head held high, whether you won or lost.
00:04:34.016 --> 00:04:38.144
And walk off the field with your head held high whether you won or lost.
00:04:39.716 --> 00:04:40.764
Anything less is a disservice to the game.
00:04:40.764 --> 00:04:44.911
Let's talk about losing, accepting a tough loss.
00:04:44.911 --> 00:04:49.499
It stings, it burns, it hurts, but it's part of the game.
00:04:49.499 --> 00:04:54.889
The way you handle defeat is a reflection of your character.
00:04:54.889 --> 00:05:00.178
Blaming others, throwing tantrums or getting into fights doesn't change the outcome.
00:05:00.178 --> 00:05:03.555
It just shows a lack of maturity and respect.
00:05:05.125 --> 00:05:09.396
Remember the greatest players in a game have lost more times than they can count.
00:05:09.396 --> 00:05:12.293
It's how they respond to those losses.
00:05:12.293 --> 00:05:14.384
That's what made them into legends.
00:05:14.384 --> 00:05:15.766
It's how they respond to those losses.
00:05:15.766 --> 00:05:16.468
That's what made them into legends.
00:05:16.468 --> 00:05:19.894
Let's not forget about a team reflects its coach.
00:05:19.894 --> 00:05:21.817
I'm a big believer in this.
00:05:21.817 --> 00:05:34.576
If you, as a coach, lose your temper, argue with the umpires, totally disrespect your opponent, guess what your players are going to follow suit.
00:05:34.576 --> 00:05:36.338
They look up to you.
00:05:36.338 --> 00:05:44.608
They model their behavior after you.
00:05:44.608 --> 00:05:47.175
So if you want a team that plays with class and respect, you have to lead by example.
00:05:47.175 --> 00:05:54.004
And, like I spoke to earlier, the Michigan players did exactly what their coach was doing.
00:05:54.004 --> 00:05:56.745
The Michigan players did exactly what their coach was doing.
00:05:56.745 --> 00:05:59.088
But here's where it gets controversial.
00:05:59.108 --> 00:06:05.879
Youth and travel sports, I believe, are breeding grounds for these negative attitudes.
00:06:05.879 --> 00:06:10.029
These environments where winning is everything often creates entitled, disrespectful players.
00:06:10.029 --> 00:06:12.673
Often creates entitled, disrespectful players.
00:06:12.673 --> 00:06:24.964
From an early age, kids are taught that they're the best, that they deserve to win and that losing is unacceptable.
00:06:24.964 --> 00:06:28.454
And when these kids grow up, they carry those same toxic attitudes into high school, college and beyond.
00:06:28.454 --> 00:06:39.939
The result Players who can't handle losing, who disrespect their opponents and then entarnish the integrity of the game.
00:06:42.367 --> 00:06:43.872
The narrative needs to be changed.
00:06:43.872 --> 00:06:56.365
We need to teach our young players that sportsmanship is more important than winning, that respect for the game, for their opponents and for themselves is what truly matters.
00:06:56.365 --> 00:07:04.646
We need to show them that winning with grace and losing with dignity are the marks of a true athlete.
00:07:04.646 --> 00:07:08.814
So, coaches, it's on us to set the standard.
00:07:08.814 --> 00:07:13.512
Lead by example, teach our players that baseball is more than just a game.
00:07:13.512 --> 00:07:20.954
It's a platform to build character and to learn life lessons and to grow as individuals.
00:07:20.954 --> 00:07:26.112
Let's honor the game by embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship.
00:07:26.112 --> 00:07:33.430
